As homeowners desire more living space, rental space and Air BnB spaces, they often finish out previously unconditioned spaces. Or poorly conditioned spaces. Be it a garage, attic space, basement, or bonus room these spaces that need air conditioning are often not large enough to really need a full ducted central HVAC system. This where Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps come in.
With ductless AC systems, all of the air is conditioned and processed in a small wall mounted device in your room. They are very un-obtrusive, streamlined, quite, efficient, and do an incredible job of heating and cooling your space.
Check out this video that explains a bit about these systems.

As well as being versatile in location and convenient, ductless systems are also incredibly efficient, so adding them to your home does not add additional dollars to your energy bills. Mini split heat pumps use an advanced technology (VRF) that incorporate DC inverted, variable speed compressor. While we don’t expect you to fully understand that, just know that it means that your heat pump/AC is operating at exactly the level you need, instead of just off or on.
With the VRF technology, a heat pump is also able to work at full efficiency down to around 4 degrees F. A typical central (unitary) heat pump looses efficiency at around 25 degrees, and requires auxiliary heating (resistance heat strips) to assist, which draws a very high amount of electricity to operate.A mini split heat pump does not suffer from that ailment.
Since ductless systems do not require ducts, they can be placed in may non traditional places. As well as being mounted high on a wall, these systems also come with options to mount flush into ceilings, or low near the floor. Finding a good location for a mini split system is rarely a problem.
There are many advantages that make ductless systems very useful and necessary for many projects.
While not as well known in the US, these systems have been standard issue in the UK, Asia, and Central and South America. So they are a tried and trued technology. As energy efficiency and environmental conciousness becomes more prevalant in the US, these systems are taking over huge portions of the HVAC industry. With SEER ratings approching 32 SEER, its hard to ignore.
