Here are 8 Great Ways to Lower Your Cooling Costs.
You know summer’s hit the sunny streets of East Nashville when electric bills are spiking and backyard gardeners are fretting over whether or not their gigantic (and often truly hideous) tomatoes are going to ripen slowly enough to make it to next month’sTomato Fest.
And when you’re just so dang hot all the darn time. So hot.
When it comes to keeping your air conditioning costs down, we’ve got the common-sense and Cumberland-sense tips and tricks you’re looking for.
Don’t Use Your AC So Much, Part I
Yup. We’re going for the obvious on this one. Whether you’re leaving the house for a day at the office or a week at the beach, there’s no need to keep your air conditioner chugging along while you’re not around. You’ll save cash, prolong the life of your air conditioner, and do wonders for the environment.
It’s really that simple. But we’ve managed to come up with seven more energy-saving ways to keep you cool this summer.
Don’t Use Your AC So Much, Part II
According to the Department of Energy, you can save up to 10% annually by adjusting your temperature by seven to ten degrees for eight hours a day. Programmable and smart thermostats slash energy consumption by adjusting temperatures while you’re away or asleep. You can program them yourself or ask your 14-year-old to do it for you.
Hate making decisions? Wondering which thermostat’s right for you? Naturally, we have opinions. Check out our Thermostat Smackdown for more info.
Use a Fan
Or, Don’t Use Your AC So Much, Part III. Hmmmm. We’re seeing a trend here, but seriously, the best way to save money on air conditioning is to use less air conditioning. So, use a ceiling fan or circulating fan instead! We’re big, ahem, fans of the Vornado.
Fans won’t cool a room, but they’ll make the room more comfortable. And if you do have the AC running, they’ll circulate the cool air more effectively so you can bump the set point up a few more degrees. Just remember to turn the fan off when you leave the room, otherwise you’re just wasting energy.
Insulate Your Attic
Houselogic estimates that you can save up to $600 on heating and cooling by insulating your attic. Or hire us to insulate your attic for you, because you really don’t want to do that right now.
Investing in a beach umbrella and a big floppy hat are no-brainers when it comes to personal sun protection. But did you know that keeping your home out of the rays is also a great way to reduce your air conditioning costs? Give your AC a break by planting a nice shady maple tree, installing a light-colored reflective metal roof, upgrading your windows, and pulling down your shades.
Maintain Your Air Conditioning Unit
It’s great that you’re using your AC less and that you’re using your Vornado more, but you still need to take care of your heating and cooling systems. For just $75, we’ll take care of it for you, if you’d like. Because that’s just the kind of crew we are. Learn more about our Preventative Maintenance services here!
Change Your Filters
It’s not enough to install a programmable thermostat, fire up a fan, and hire us to do some routine air conditioning maintenance every now and again. You need to change your air filters. You really, really, do. Like, more often than you think you should.
Dirty filters, like dirty mouths, are the work of the devil. They make your system work hard for less reward. Get this: replacing your filters once a month will lower your AC unit’s consumption by 5-15% (energy.gov).
Fire Up the BBQ
Use all the cash you’ve saved by not running your AC so much and make a stop at Porter Road Butcher. It’s delicious and you won’t have to turn on the oven or wash a bunch of pots and pans.
