It Takes a Village: Ask for Recommendations
Sadly, finding a reputable HVAC contractor can be tough. It’s one of the reasons we started Cumberland Cooling in the first place. Don’t let our youthful good looks fool you: between the two of us, we have several decades of industry experience under our belts. We were fed up with unnecessary maintenance plans, scare tactics, shoddy workmanship (not ours), and service calls with ransom-like price tags. So yes, we know that we’re biased, but we’re saying we’re totally legit, honest, and reputable.
There’s no need to take our word for it, though. In fact, before you do anything, ask for recommendations. Ask your family and friends, ask Ian White, bring it up at your next neighborhood association meeting or solicit recommendations on local neighborhood social media pages.
We’re shameless, as you know, so here’s a peek at what folks have said about us on the notoriously even-handed and level-headed East Nashville Facebook page:
Read Online Reviews
Now that you have your list of potential HVAC candidates, it’s time to brave the internet. Look at the company’s website to make sure they’re licensed, have expertise in the areas you’re looking for, and present themselves professionally (or amusingly?) online.
Next, read reviews from reliable sources like:

Grab Your Phone and Make a Few Calls
Once you’ve read your share of glowing reviews, call your top heating and cooling picks and see which of your finalists blows you away. Describe your heating or cooling issue to the best of your ability and see how they respond. If they treat you with respect and courtesy, you’re on to something!
Ask the Right Questions
While you’re at it, here are a few great questions to ask any heating and cooling contractor:
Are you licensed, insured, and factory certified?
This is a biggie! If you ask no other questions, you must ask this one. A licensed HVAC contractor is registered with a governing body at a state or local level and is therefore accountable for their work. Factory certified technicians have completed detailed coursework offered by specific manufacturers.
How much is this going to cost me?
Most reputable heating and cooling companies offer free estimates. It’s just part of doing business. If a contractor wants to give you a “quick” estimate over the phone, don’t fall for it. In-person, written estimates are going to be far more accurate. Once you have what you believe to be an accurate and fair estimate, make sure you fully understand what’s included in the estimate (materials, labor, and a contingency for unforeseen problems).
How and when do you expect payment?
We know, it’s never fun to talk about money, but make sure you understand when and how your contractor expects to be paid. If your contractor asks for full payment up front, politely decline and look for a new heating a cooling company for the job.
For the record, we don’t expect to be paid until the job is done to your satisfaction. We accept checks and major credit cards. We’ll hook you up with financing and we even accept online payments!
Who will be doing the work?
Ask the technician who is giving you the quote if they’re going to be the ones doing the actual work. If not, find out who will be. Often, larger HVAC companies employ several technicians or use subcontractors.
Who takes care of disposing of the old unit and cleaning up?
You’d think this would be an unnecessary question, but alas, it’s not. There’s nothing worse than writing a check and then cleaning up after your contractor’s mess. Okay, death by papercuts would definitely be worse. But you get the idea.
What’s your guarantee?
So you assumed your heating and cooling company would do things right the first time. So what if something that’s supposed to work, doesn’t? Before signing a contract, ask about the company’s guarantee or warranty. Then, make sure you have it in writing!
Here’s ours: 100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back.
